Courier Sports Staff ... Quick thinking helped Dave Villwock avoid disaster but his U-1 Miss Elam Plus may be done for the weekend after just one day of testing at this weekend’s Unlimited hydroplane race in Valleyfield, Quebec.
Villwock, who had the fastest speed of the day on the tiny one-mile track, apparently lost his skid fin as he exited the course’s tightest turn early Friday afternoon. Losing the skid fin caused Villwock to fly off the course right toward a patrol boat.
Villwock was able to take evasive action and avoid the patrol boat, but he ended up driving up onto the rock-laden bank, tearing up the bottom of the boat. Villwock immediately opened the cockpit and walked into the rescue boat.
Early reports indicate that the Elam team is now out of the running for this weekend’s race, but the team’s veteran crew has worked miracles before. Last year at the Gold Cup in Detroit, the boat flipped in Friday testing only to come back and take second place in the final heat.
The accident marked the second time this year that Villwock has had a close encounter with a patrol boat. While testing in Seattle last month, a boat moved into the Elam’s path and skirted away just moments before the Elam arrived. The resulting wake caused the Elam to jump several feet in the air, but Villwock was able to keep it from blowing over.
