Villwock wins Thunder on the Ohio marred by three flips ... AP Story ...
Dave Villwock drove Miss Ellstrom Elam Plus to victory in the Thunder on the
Ohio unlimited hydroplane race Sunday, his 10th win in the last 12 Thunder races.
Villwock finished with an average speed of 140.203 mph over the final 10-mile heat,
which capped a day that was marred by flips in three consecutive preliminary heats.
None of the drivers was seriously injured. They were Jeff Bernard, in the
FormulaBoats.com, Jean Theoret in the Miss Beacon Plumbing, and Mike Allen, in
FormulaBoats.com II. Two returned to racing, and Theoret finished second in the final
with a speed of 136.167. Jimmy King, driving the piston-powered Master Tire, finished
third at 135.982. American Boat Racing Association historian Fred Farley said three such
consecutive flips had not occurred since unlimited hydroplane racing began in the early
1900s. "It is amazing that they hit with such significant force and there were not any
significant injuries," said Thunder medical director Jim Spiller. "The technology has
improved so much in the last 20 years. You don't look for three in one day, certainly
not two within 30 minutes of each other."
