DETROIT - Steve David was sure that his Gold Cup drought was finally over. After 25 years, five runner-up finishes and numerous broken hearts, he was finally going to get a chance to hoist the oldest trophy in motorsports and the most coveted in hydroplane racing.

But it wasn't meant to be. Trailing Dave Villwock by a roostertail in turn two of the final heat, David appeared to get washed down when Villwock appeared to switch lanes illegally. When no call was made, the Oh Boy! Oberto/Miss Madison team immediately appealed.

When officials upheld the no-call, David was incensed.

"We're happy with getting second but not happy because we feel like we won the Gold Cup," said David. "The officials cost us the national championship (on Saturday) and the Gold Cup today. It's disappointing."

He later backed off his comments after viewing the race video and acknowledged that Villwock in fact did nothing wrong.

"We reviewed the video and they won fair and square," David wrote on Facebook. "Congratulations to Dave Villwock and his team on their Gold Cup win."

It was a disappointing end to the weekend for David, who is still seeking that first Cup win. He has now finished second six times - in 1998, 2004, 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2012 - all to Villwock. He did not compete last year while recovering from broken ribs and the 2008 race was canceled due to high winds.

Despite the loss, David and the Oberto put on quite a show over the weekend, not all of it in their favor.

David lost two preliminary heats to Villwock, both in close battles. The second heat, Heat 3A, saw both David and Villwock penalized $250 and 50 points after illegal lane changes.

David was also penalized in Heat 2A when it was ruled that he crossed the one-minute score-up buoy early. A day later, he was still stewing over the call.

"It is absolutely amazing to me that H1 will not get cameras on that line," David said. "We have cameras in the cockpit. I wasn't over."

But the weekend wasn't all bad. During that same Heat 2A, David posted the fastest single lap of competition during the weekend, a blistering speed of 165.878 mph.

He also won Heat 4A in dominating fashion, a race that ended early after J.W. Myers blew over in the U-11 Miss Peters & May.

"The crew has given me a great boat. It's faster than it's ever been before," David said. "We were four mph faster than we were (two years ago) in qualifying and we have everything in place. We're going to go to the west coast ready to roll."

Other than the 50-point penalty, Villwock had a perfect weekend and now leads David by 515 national points with four races to go. But David has had a tremendous amount of success in the Tri-Cities, where he had a three-race win streak snapped by Villwock in his first race back from a season-opening crash at Madison last year and David won at Seattle in 2011. David is confident that the Oberto that heads west to the Columbia River and on to Seatle will be the boat to beat.

"This boat is faster than it ever has been and I feel like we have a real shot at being the fastest qualifier." David said. "I'm looking forward to it."
